Where a rip line sits

A rip line is a dry-end machine. It works on kiln-dried lumber, after the kiln and usually after a surfacing pass, breaking boards down into the strips a flooring or dimension line needs. Nothing about it touches the green side of the mill.

In a rip-first plant, which is what nearly every flooring operation runs, the ripsaw sets the widths and the chop saw downstream does most of the defect removal. That division of labour matters when you are sizing a line, because it means the ripsaw's job is width recovery and the crosscut's job is quality. The Forest Service put the same point more generally: whichever cutting operation comes second is the one doing most of the defecting.
