A board edger is a green-end machine that handles one flitch at a time, between the headrig or resaw and the trimmer. Taking them singly is what lets the machine make a separate decision for every piece, and Lico rates the ADM and ADMS at up to 60 boards per minute, a figure calculated on 8 foot flitches, with a minimum gap of 0.6 seconds between pieces. Piece counts fall as flitches get longer, so the number is only meaningful alongside the length.

This is where a mill decides what a board is going to be. A small change in where the edge falls moves the board between grades, and in hardwood the grade is what you are paid for, so the machine is optimizing for value rather than for the widest possible square edge.
