Where a gang edger sits
A gang edger is a green-end machine. It works downstream of the headrig and resaw, taking cants and multiple boards in a single pass and putting a square edge on them before they reach the trimmer and the sorter. Feed speeds on the DEB range run from 60 to 600 feet per minute depending on how the line is configured.
The decision being made at this station is how much wane to leave, and it is worth more than it looks. The grading rules tell a mill to edge and trim so as to produce the best possible appearance while conserving the usable product of the log, and those two goals pull against each other on nearly every board. Edge too generously and you throw away width that was carrying grade. Edge too lightly and the board fails on appearance. Getting it wrong costs volume and grade at the same time, which is why this is one of the first places mills put optimization.
